Overall rating : (1 to 5 stars)
The self-contained In Crowd, led by the very gifted lead singer, songwriter and producer Fil Callender, started as a hotel band in the 1960s, but although they gained some popularity in the second half of the 1970s they never came to the attention of the crossover audience for roots reggae. In 1977 they released "His Majesty Is Coming" on the Cactus label, one of their best known singles and a major self-produced hit.

Now the riddim of "His Majesty Is Coming" has been resuscitated to full effect by Russ D & his Disciples Rhythm Section. The latter have stayed very close to the original riddim, which has been voiced by Peter Hunningale (one of the UK's best vocalists), Jamaican reggae singer Ansel Cridland of The Meditations, and veteran deejay Ranking Joe. With such a riddim it's obvious that the vocal cuts simply have to express rootical enough concerns in the lyrics, and that's exactly what the listener is offered. Side A, called the UK side, starts off with a beatiful tune by Peter Hunningale, who's in great shape on "Give Thanks For Life". Then it's time for "Dubbing His Majesty", an awesome Dub version of the riddim created by Russ D. The flipside is the JA side, with first The Meditations adding another great effort of easy-rocking-but-tough quality with the superb "Abandon I". Ranking Joe delivers the matching "The Gathering", another winner on the Rockers style riddim.

Great riddim, great vocal cuts and an awesome Dub version... what more do you want?!
