Those who grew up with the dub albums of the 1970s, when radically remixed versions of the original vocal sides where made by pioneers such as Osbourne Ruddock aka King Tubby, Prince Jammy, Prince Phillip Smart, Scientist, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Errol "ET" Thompson, will admit that by and large contemporary dub sets lack musical imagination and engineering ingenuity.
"Dub Expectations" is a brand new dub album by Michael Rose & Shades Of Black, and again we're treated to a contemporary dub effort that all in all fails to cause some real excitement. The main problem is that most of the dub workouts lack a certain amount of bite and inventiveness. Of course, there are a few nice Steppers dubs included on this disc like "Dub Freedom" and "Dub It On", which are surely worthwhile hearing when played at a roots dance, but as a whole this collection is a disappointing affair. Along with this dub album comes a vocal set entitled "Great Expectations". |
