"Reggae $aver$" is a series of album reissues from the U.S.-based Heartbeat label which includes Sugar Minott's "This Is Reggae". From the late sixties - when he formed the group the African Brothers with Tony Tuff and Derrick Howard - up to the end of the nineties Sugar Minott has proven himself one of the most dynamic reggae artists around. That the gifted Sugar Minott is regarded "the voice of reggae" is due to the major contribution he had in the development of roots, dancehall and lovers reggae. Not only as an extremely popular singer with countless number one hits in Jamaica, but also as an accomplished producer, a successful sound-system operator and promotor of fresh singers and deejays like Junior Reid, Barry Brown and Ranking Joe. This solid compilation set draws tracks from nine "Heartbeat" albums, which were mainly released in the eighties. This CD contains no tunes that will surprise his long time fans, but this compilation set is definitely a nice purchase for those who still need a decent introduction to Sugar Minott's singing career.
