Zvuloon Dub System's debut set "Freedom Time" is yet another confirmation that reggae music has no boundaries. Since Bob Marley brought it to the four corners of the world it has continuously inspired vocalists and players of instruments from a variety of countries to use this 'message music' as a vehicle to express their feelings and thoughts.

And now we have Israel's Zvuloon Dub System, an 8 piece band with some of the best Israeli underground musicians, that becomes part of the ever growing international reggae fraternity. Adopting their name from one of the twelve tribes of Israel, the band was formed in 2006 by the Smilan brothers. They shared the same passion for roots reggae and dub, with influences from a variety of music styles, like Ethiopian jazz and rare grooves from the 70's, American soul, funk and jazz, alongside with Israeli mizrahi (Mediterranean) music. Similarly to the major producers of reggae, like Lee 'Scratch' Perry and King Tubby, the band is also keen on creating not just their own music, but their own sound. Therefore they produce, record and mix all their tracks in the band's home studio.

The "Freedom Time" album -- except for their interpretation of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" consisting of previously unreleased original songs written and composed by the band -- is a surprisingly good and mature sounding project. Lead singer Gili Yalo, who was born in Ethiopia, has a distinctive powerful vocal delivery, which is underpinned by captivating, full sounding 'live' riddims. The usage of real horns adds a great feel and vibe to the expertly played riddim tracks. Besides that the band has also paid attention to the lyrical content of most of their songs, which makes it a joy to listen to highlights such as "Lion Of Judah", "Freedom Time", "All Over The World", "Go Down Moses", and "Going To Zion". Also worth hearing is "Nah Give Up", the collaboration with reggae veteran Ranking Joe.
