At the beginning of 2008 Greensleeves unleashed a smooth collection called "Songs For Reggae Lovers", a fine double CD filled with 30 tracks aimed at the more mature reggae listener, who wants to sit back and listen to melodic reggae from the past. A year later the company gave us Volume 2 and there was no change: the selection ranged from solid tracks from the past to recent hits. At the beginning of 2010 Volume 3 hits the streets with another superb collection of reggae tunes.
After Sugar Minott's crossover hit Good Thing Going comes a heavenly track across the superb 'Sugar' riddim, Gappy Ranks with The Rain. The 2007 hit by Sanchez, In Your Eyes is next, a fine John John produced lick of the 'Love I Can Feel' riddim. From 2006 comes Tarrus Riley's well known tune She's Royal. That same year Gyptian enjoyed considerable chart success with Beautiful Lady. The hits Substitute Lover and Tempted To Touch were recorded in the early nineties and still sound fresh. The combination Alborosie and Etana contributes last year's hit single Blessing. Top notch crooner Lukie D performs a cover of the Backstreet Boys' Drowning. The last four tracks of disc one are good lovers tunes from the past, with Frankie Paul's 80's hit Sara arguably being the best known. Switching to disc two, we are offered one of Dennis Brown's weaker tunes, Love Has Found Its Way, a funky tune that was aimed at the crossover market when it was released in the mid 80s. Skip it and go to Luciano's excellent Shake It Up Tonight. Cocoa Tea with his cool-toned, laid-back vocals are perfect for sweet, smooth lovers rock. This album features several fine tunes by this sympathetic vocalist. One Away Woman is a smooth lovers tune from 1991, but he also delivers two nice duets with Judy Mowatt and J.C. Lodge. John Holt's Queen Of The Ghetto is the oldest track here. He's one of Jamaica’s sweetest singers and enduring songwriters. Jamelody is blessed with a soulful and gritty voice. He's certainly a promise for the future. In 2008 he was high in the charts with Love Crazy. Mr. Vegas does a good do-over of the 'Revolution/Intercom' riddim, produced by Ffrenchie for his Maximum Sound imprint in 2000. The album closes with a nice remix from 2007. It's Da'Ville's cooperation with Sean Paul that brought us Always On My Mind in 2007. Good combination style tune! Once more we have to conclude, if you're into sweet and melodic reggae this set is for you. Enjoy! |
