Denise Sherwood – This Road | New Album
Denise Sherwood has released “This Road”, an album that features writing, production and instrumental contributions from her father Adrian Sherwood, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Mala, Mark Stewart, Skip McDonald and Doug Wimbish. In addition to this extended family who came together to help her talent flourish, the album also features the track “Uncertain Times” with drums by the late Style Scott, who the singer lovingly recalls as “my beautiful uncle.”
“There was always music around me. I was always having dinner with different artists. The house was full of people. Loads of parties. But creative types can be unstable too, which I sometimes found scary and confusing as a child. People I knew died; Andy Fairley for example, and Junior Delgado – he was a big person in my life. This is where the sadder elements in my music originate from,” Denise reveals.
Portraying dark themes and damaged characters through an empathetic filter of bittersweet optimism, ‘This Road’ is a work of contrasts, which musically matches the mixed emotions felt in life. Bass pressure, contemporary club beats, nourishing roots music, sumptuous instrumentation and accessible, pop-schooled melodicism are woven together by her soothing but heavy-hearted voice, which is perfectly matured and full of depth.
