Reggae Got Soul book

After previously having published MEMORIES OF REGGAE GEEL 1998-2020 and the STUDIO ONE FILES, we are proud to announce the publishing of a third book titled REGGAE GOT SOUL: JAMAICAN COVERS AND THEIR ORIGINALS.

From the early 1960s, and even before that, it was not uncommon in Jamaica for artists to record their own versions of songs by US performers. Not surprising, since these songs were extremely popular on the island as the early sound system pioneers imported soul, r&b and pop records from the US. This book tries to trace the origins of many of those covers and their performers. Due to the overwhelming quantity of covers, we had to restrict our selection for the book to songs within the Black Music genre.

The book consists of details on about 170 Jamaican tunes and original songs, along with short bios and photos of artists, record labels, and album covers. Included are tunes from the likes of Alton Ellis, Bob Andy, The Heptones, Slim Smith, Pat Kelly, Sugar Minott, Shinehead, The Techniques, The Wailers, Winston Francis, Delroy Wilson, Derrick Harriott, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, and many more. In addition, it offers a list with an extensive selection of covers and and their corresponding original songs that have not been described in the book. Furthermore, readers with smartphones can utilize the QR codes provided alongside the book to access the Jamaican tunes on YouTube.

The book can be purchased via Amazon in the US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Canada, and Australia. Format: 180 Page Paperback.
