In the spring of 2016 Sugar Cane Records, the Arcata CA based label founded and owned by Californian singer Jason Andrew McCommas aka Jah Sun, created waves when they put out Raphael’s sophomore album “Reggae Survival”, actually their first full length album release. At the beginning of 2017, the record label returns with a brand new project called “Food For Thought”, done in collaboration with Aurora Innovations and Roots Organic, known from sponsoring many music mixtapes.
“Food For Thought” features songs that talk about cultivation and healthy lifestyle, all originally produced for this project by Don Sugar and mixed by Daddario Casillo. Jah Sun from Humboldt County CA, present here with one solo offering and part of two collaborations, made his appearance on the reggae scene in 2006 with his debut album “Height Of Light”, which in early 2012 was followed by his breakout album “Battle The Dragon”. Jah Sun opens this collection with “Farmer’s Anthem”, a thoroughly entertaining tune underpinned by an excellent riddim with great horns. Seattle born and raised Bobby Hustle also finds a place on this album with “Up In The Hills”, a solid laid back tune with serious lyrical content. Next comes David Lion aka lion D from Italy, whose 2016 single “Heartical Don” was produced by Don Sugar and released by Sugar Cane Records. David Lion, definitely one of the most naturally gifted artists, makes “Organic Herb” a big standout.
The title track “Food For Though” from Jah Sun and I-Kronik drops in. Maybe not as strong as the previous track, but all in all a tune worth hearing more than once. Stevie Culture, a Jamaican artist living in the US West Coast, together with Jah Works come up with the real nice sounding “Can’t Live Without”, while the deadly combination Raphael & Triston Palma turn “Joka Soundbwoy” from Raphael’s “Reggae Survival” album into the killer “Joka Farm Boy”, once again reworking Triston Palma’s 1981 ganja anthem “Joker Smoker”. Veteran artist from Brooklyn, Rocker-T, contributes the very nice “Roots Organic”, which is followed by the strong “Healing Herb” from Virgin Islands roots reggae singer Ras Attitude. Jah Sun & I-Kronik return in the company of Stevie Culture for the well entertaining and beautiful “Pro Seed”. Before Sugar Don closes this set with a wicked dub version of the title track “Food For Thought”, it’s Messenjah Selah, who delivers the powerful sung “Conscious Way” across a riddim that only features piano and percussion.
