Y.G.F Records (Young Generation Fraternity) has put out the anticipated “Gifted EP” by fast-rising Jamaican reggae/dancehall artist Deep Jahi, who was born Rushane Sanderson in rural St. Mary. The gifted vocalist, winner of the 2012 edition of Magnum King and Queens and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Festival in 2014, has a raw passion and feeling in his voice, which can be heard on every song. Because he’s also a good songwriter, all of the songs feature substantial lyrics.

The six-track project gathers productions by Studio Vibes Entertainment, Badart Muzic, Luv Number One Productions, Run Road Productions, and Seanizzle Records, which makes it a varied affair. The previously released single “Double Standard” comes across the Luv Number One Productions produced “Free Yourself” riddim. It’s a wicked social commentary that will certainly please the fan of good roots reggae music. “Gifted”, the title track of Deep Jahi’s debut EP, is a nice song with R&B influences and a subtle use of vocal harmony and acoustic piano. “Gunz Out”, a hard hitting tune across the “Dub Wi Luv” riddim, speaks to the harsh reality of the crime and violence plaguing the country of Jamaica, where police and gunmen are always in a confrontation. Conscious tune “Underrated” once again showcases Deep Jahi’s vocal and lyrical skills and talent and so does the matching dancehall vibed “Billion A Mawnin”. Mad vibes! The last track, “Te Amo”, is a smooth lovers tune with a nice melody to it on which Deep Jahi sounds totally different thus showing that he has great voice control.

The only minus here is the varied mastering of the tracks, which spoils the listening pleasure a bit.

Conclusion A worthwhile collection from a much promising youg artist who deserves to be heard.
