Sugar Minott

Lincoln “Sugar” Minott is definitely one of the cornerstones of reggae music and thus can be reckoned among Jamaica’s most respected artists. During his career, which started in 1969, he has established his name as promoter of fresh Jamaican talent, sound system operator, accomplished producer, proprietor of the Black Roots and Youth Promotion stables, songwriter and, of course, singer.

Exceptional Voice

As a singer he’s loved for his rich, silky smooth voice and the consistency of delivery. Although he emerged as a conscious roots reggae singer his hit songs span Roots & Culture, Raggamuffin, Lovers and broader themes. Sugar Minott’s exceptional voice – controlled, captivating and uncontrived – always caresses the eardrums while listening to the tunes on countless singles or on his many albums.

Original Release

At the time of its original release in September 2003, Dancehall ruled and it truly was a relief to spin such a deep rootical set as this one – “Leave Out A Babylon” by Sugar Minott. The album was recorded in Europe, at the Zenah Recording studio in Montreuil on the outskirts of Paris with a group of committed local musicians stepped in the consciousness of Rastafari. The Zenah studio is analogue and they favour live recordings, resulting in a sound which is reminiscent of the sounds of the seventies.

Deep Roots Tunes

Here you’ll catch Sugar Minott at his best, performing deep roots tunes. The overall feel is authentic and traditional. As soon as Sugar starts singing the first tune – “Easy Mr. Bush” – you’ll realize that this is an album full of vibes and reality. Some of the standout tracks here are “Practice What U Preach”, “Peaceful Valley”, “Jah Is With Us” and “Where Is The Love”. For whatever reason not included on the original Zenah Music release, but added to this remastered re-release are “Now Or Never” and the noteworthy “Religious Fanatics” plus the songs’ dub versions, which are a welcome addition to the three fine dub outings that are already known from the original album.
