Baked A La Ska
Manchester, England’s eleven-piece premier and rather, unconventional ska and reggae outfit returns for their fifth album with this ten track CD, a celebration of all things spooky for Halloween. They neatly manage the balance between a humorous approach and some fine musicianship, from the crazy (‘The Addams Family’ theme) via country -‘Ghost Riders In The Sky’ – rhythm and blues with Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ ‘I Put A Spell On You’, jazz courtesy of ‘Old Devil Moon’ and pop, thanks to ‘Ghostbusters’, on to a tribute to Manchester’s Northern Soul following with the excellent ska reworking of Motown’s ‘There’s A Ghost In My House’.
Worth A Listen
Musically the band draws on the original sound of Jamaican ska, Two Tone, and roots reggae (sometimes in the same number), with Kuntri Ranks supplying plenty of old-skool dee-jaying above some rock-solid rhythms – try the closing ‘Old Devil Moon’, absolutely beautiful. Even Darth Vader is dubbed into reggae submission on ‘The Imperial March’ – and the horns are very much in Skatalites mode on this! A couple of tracks don’t work quite as well, but everything here is still worth a listen and the set is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
