In the mid-1970s, Winston Fergus embarked on his musical journey as the lead vocalist for the UK reggae band, The Equators. The band released several singles, including the popular track Father Oh Father, which was published under Joe Sinclair’s Klik label. Eventually, Winston decided to pursue a solo career and released some singles on Lightning Records. In 1979, his 12″ record titled Pay To Live was launched by Burning Rockers, a label associated with Burning Sounds. Over the years, Winston continued to create music, and in the early 1990s, he established his own record label, Fergie Music. Since then, his releases have been sporadic. In 2021, the Belgian label Roots Vibation released a 12″ vinyl featuring Pay To Live on the A-side and Keep Dancing on the B-side, both accompanied by dub versions. Recently, in March of this year, Burning Sounds reissued the original 12″ single Pay To Live, encased in a sleeve adorned with the original artwork.

We are delighted by the reissue of Winston’s exceptional roots scorcher! This release is available on 180-gram vinyl and offers a wonderfully clear and transparent sound quality. This remarkable piece of music offers a stark portrayal and social critique of life in Babylon during the late 1970s. Set to a lively steppers riddim, the song retains its power and authenticity. The dub version seamlessly complements the vocal track, with the synth elements blending harmoniously. Winston’s vocal fragments pierce through like fiery protest arrows. Although we couldn’t determine the musicians behind the solid musical backing or the mastermind behind the flawless dub version, it doesn’t diminish the sheer joy of listening to this masterpiece!
