TUNE OF THE WEEK #14
SUGAR MINOTT – RUN THINGS – XTERMINATOR
Sugar Minott rides a relicked version of the Cornell Campbell’s Stars riddim for Phillip ‘Fatis’ Burrell’s Xterminator label. It’s actually the same riddim known from Beres Hammond’s 1992 hit tune Full Attention. In contrast with Beres Hammond’s anguished sounding delivery, Sugar Minott sounds very relaxed on Run Things, never using five notes where one will do. On this song he returns to a theme expressed on great songs like Vanity and Jah Jah Rule, warning them who “gwan like dem alone run things”.
In fact, there is another tune on Xterminator label in 1993 with Lenky Roy singing « Unfaithful lover ». I’m not sure but Beres tune comes later in 2000 (on my press) peace
Your Beres single is a repress. The original single was released in Jamaica on the Xterminator label in 1992. You’re correct about Lenky Roy.
