TUNE OF THE WEEK #20
JUNIOR BYLES – PLACE CALL AFRICA – UPSETTER RECORDS
Junior Byles’ Place Call Africa (also titled A Place Called Africa), produced by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry in 1970, is arguably the most affecting of any African awareness song told through the eyes of a child whose questions are answered through his mother’s tears. The song is a heartfelt cry on the Rastafarian theme of repatriation. With Wailers member Peter Tosh on melodica and backed with a deadly drum & bass, this is one of Junior Byles’ all-time roots classics.
