TUNE OF THE WEEK #38
ALTON ELLIS – DELIVER US TO AFRICA – MATADOR RECORDS
Alton Ellis’ Jamaican hit single from 1971, Deliver Us To Africa aka Lord Deliver Us, was produced by Lloyd Daley. The producer’s Matador imprint has always been in high regard by collectors of classical reggae music from the period 1969-1973. Unfortunately outside reggae connoisseurs his works remain largely overlooked. Alton Ellis’ Deliver Us To Africa is one of the legendary singer’s socially conscious songs he wrote and recorded. This song, and also Back To Africa which he recorded for Lloyd Daley, was inspired by the reasonings of Rasta elder Mortimer Planno – others being Studio One thrillers Blackman’s Pride, Blackish White, and Africa Descendants.
