Double 12″ Spin #2

A. Sanchez – Place Mash Up/Mash Up Dub
B. Sanchez – Come To Rule/Ruling Dub
Label: RAS 7032

This time around, we’ve got a couple of 12″ singles that are all about dancehall vibes. Let’s kick things off with a real banger from Kevin Jackson, also known as Sanchez, the singer with the smoothest voice in the game. He burst onto the scene in the late 80s with a ton of singles and went on to release a bunch of successful albums. Sanchez quickly became one of the most adored singers of the 80s and beyond. In 1989, he dropped his album Number One, which was produced by the legendary Philip “Fatis” Burrell. Two tracks from that album were released on a 12″ single by Real Authentic Sound, Doctor Dread’s label in the US. On the A-side, Sanchez teams up with the talented deejay Flourgon, although he unfortunately doesn’t get a mention. On the B-side there’s the tune Come To Rule, followed by a dub version, but sadly, Flourgon’s touch is missing. This 12″ single hit the shelves in the US back in 1989.

A. Little John – Bubbling Style
B. Colour Man – Skin Afe Peel
Label: Black Roots – LM241284

Little John, real name John McMorris, is a true Jamaican dancehall legend. He started crushin’ it at the age of 9, back in 1979, recording tracks like 51 Storm, What Is Katty, and Robe, and everyone liked how his voice just flowed over any riddim he touched. By the mid-80s, Little John already had a bunch of albums under his belt, but the soundsystem scene was where he truly shined. You could catch him performing with crews like Sugar Minott’s Youth Promotion, Romantic Hi Fi, basically all the big names – Kilimanjaro, Gemini and Henry “Junjo” Lawes’ Volcano Hi Power. One of his killer tracks is Bubbling Style, which rides the General riddim like a pro. The B-side features Colour Man, a deejay who was also doing his thing in the 80s, especially with Sugar Minott’s Youth Promotion. Not as famous as Little John, but still a cool addition to the record. This 12″ single dropped in 1984 on Sugar Minott’s Black Roots label in the UK.
